sumergir

to submerge

verb soo-mehr-HEER Rare

Origin: Latin submergere

Also means

to immerse

Usage Note

Sumergir takes a hard 'h' sound for the g before i (soo-mehr-HEER). The reflexive sumergirse means to dive or immerse oneself — both literally (underwater) and figuratively (sumergirse en el trabajo, to throw oneself into work). Do not confuse with zambullirse, which implies a headfirst plunge, or hundir, which stresses sinking and destruction.

Examples

"El buzo se sumergió a veinte metros de profundidad."

Natural Translation

The diver submerged to twenty metres depth.
