hoguera

bonfire

noun oh-GEH-rah Rare

Origin: From Old Spanish foguera, from fuego (fire), from Latin focus (hearth).

Also means

pyre

Usage Note

Hoguera denotes a large open fire, whether a celebratory bonfire or a burning pyre. It is central to Spanish cultural events: the Hogueras de San Juan are the bonfires lit on midsummer night (23 June) across Spain, and the Fallas festival in Valencia culminates in burning large wooden floats called fallas. Historically, la hoguera also referred to the stake used in executions by burning. Do not confuse with fogón (cooking fire or stove burner).

Examples

"Los niños bailaron alrededor de la hoguera en la playa."

Natural Translation

The children danced around the bonfire on the beach.
