torcer

to twist

verb tor-SEHR Rare

Origin: From Latin torquere ('to twist').

Also means

to turn

Usage Note

Torcer is an irregular verb: the stem vowel o changes to ue in stressed syllables (tuerce, tuercen), and the c changes to z before o/a (tuerzo). In figurative use torcer el brazo means 'to twist someone's arm' (to pressure them), and torcerse los planes means 'for plans to go wrong'. The past participle is torcido ('twisted, crooked'), also used as an adjective meaning 'bent' or colloquially 'dishonest'.

Examples

"Me torcí el tobillo al bajar las escaleras."

Natural Translation

I twisted my ankle going down the stairs.
