sucedir
to happen
verb soo-seh-DEER Rare
Origin: From Latin succedere (to follow after, to come up to).
Also means
to follow (in sequence)
Usage Note
Suceder has two distinct uses: 'to happen' (¿Qué sucedió?, What happened?) and 'to succeed or follow' in the sense of coming after (Carlos sucedió a su padre en el trono, Carlos succeeded his father on the throne). The first is much more common in everyday speech. Do not confuse with tener éxito (to succeed in the sense of achieving a goal).
Examples
"¿Qué sucedió después del accidente?"
Natural Translation
What happened after the accident?
