sobre

on; about; over; above

preposition SOH-breh Common

Usage Note

Sobre covers physical position ('on top of', 'over') and abstract topic ('about', 'on the subject of'). When meaning 'about', it is interchangeable with acerca de in most contexts, but sobre is more concise and preferred in written registers. In time expressions, sobre las tres means 'around three o'clock', adding an approximation sense not shared by en.

Examples

"El libro está sobre la mesa."

Natural Translation

The book is on the table.
