adelante

forward

adverb ah-deh-LAHN-teh Less Common

Origin: From Latin ad + de + ante (toward, from, before).

Also means

ahead

Usage Note

Adelante expresses both physical direction (sigue adelante — keep going forward) and figurative encouragement (¡adelante! — go ahead!/come in!). As a command at a door it means 'come in'. The phrase de ahora en adelante means 'from now on'. Do not confuse with antes (before, earlier) or delante de (in front of), which also derive from the same Latin root.

Examples

"¡Sigue adelante y no te rindas!"

Natural Translation

Keep going forward and don't give up!

Literal Translation

Continue forward and not yourself yield!
