abajo

below

adverb ah-BAH-hoh Less Common

Also means

downstairs

Usage Note

Abajo expresses both position (below, underneath) and direction (downward). It pairs with arriba (above/upstairs) and with verbs of motion: bajar abajo is redundant — just bajar suffices. In protests it appears as an interjection: ¡Abajo la corrupción! ('Down with corruption!'). As a preposition it takes de: abajo de la mesa (under the table, mainly Latin America).

Examples

"Los niños juegan abajo en el jardín."

Natural Translation

The children play downstairs in the garden.
