sin

without

preposition seen Common

Usage Note

Sin triggers the infinitive in verbal complements where English uses a gerund: salió sin decir nada 'she left without saying anything'. The negative compound sin que introduces a subjunctive clause: hazlo sin que nadie te vea 'do it without anyone seeing you'. Sin embargo 'however / nevertheless' is one of the most frequent discourse connectors in formal writing.

Examples

"Salió sin su abrigo."

Natural Translation

She went out without her coat.
