Rasgar means to tear cloth, paper, or similar material with a pulling motion — rasgar una carta (to tear open a letter). It also describes the strumming motion on a guitar: rasgar las cuerdas (to strum the strings). The -gar spelling change: rasgué in the preterite first-person singular.
