probable

probable

adjective proh-BAH-bleh Less Common

Also means

likely

Usage Note

Probable triggers the subjunctive when used in the phrase es probable que ('it is likely that'), for example es probable que llueva. It is a false-quantity false friend: the English 'probable' and Spanish probable look identical but Spanish stresses the second syllable. The adverb probablemente likewise takes the subjunctive when it heads a clause expressing uncertainty.

Examples

"Es probable que llegue tarde."

Natural Translation

It is likely that he will arrive late.

Literal Translation

It is probable that he arrives late.
