latón

brass

noun lah-TOHN Rare

Origin: From Arabic lātūn (brass).

Usage Note

Latón is the alloy of copper and zinc — what English calls brass. It should not be confused with bronce (bronze, copper + tin) or cobre (copper). The Arabic-origin lātūn entered Castilian during the medieval period. The related adjective is latonero (brassmith). In musical instrument classification, instrumentos de metal covers brass instruments, not latón alone.

Examples

"El grifo está hecho de latón pulido."

Natural Translation

The tap is made of polished brass.
