Usage Note

Algodón is one of many Spanish words beginning with al- that come from Arabic. It refers to both the cotton plant and the fabric. In medical Spanish, algodón also means a cotton-wool ball. The plural is algodones; note the accent disappears as the stress shifts naturally.
