explayar

to elaborate (on)

verb ehks-plah-YAHR Rare

Also means

to expand

Usage Note

Explayar is almost always used reflexively: explayarse means to go into great detail or to speak at length on a topic — se explayó en los detalles (she elaborated on the details). The non-reflexive explayar (to spread out) is rare. It carries no negative connotation; contrast divagar (to ramble, which implies losing the thread).

Examples

"El profesor se explayó sobre el tema durante una hora."

Natural Translation

The professor elaborated on the topic for an hour.
