Ejercicio covers physical exercise (hacer ejercicio), academic exercises, and the carrying out of a role (ejercicio de la profesión). The fiscal year is often called ejercicio fiscal in Spanish-speaking countries. Note that hacer ejercicio (without an article) means 'to work out.'
