Usage Note

Derramar means to spill a liquid accidentally (derramé el café = 'I spilled the coffee') or to shed tears or blood (derramar lágrimas/sangre). The reflexive derramarse describes the liquid itself spreading: el agua se derramó. The related noun is derrame, as in derrame cerebral (stroke, literally 'cerebral spill').
