Usage Note
Contra expresses opposition (physical or abstract) and is also used in sports scores: dos contra uno '2–1'. The prefix contra- forms many Spanish compounds: contradecir 'to contradict', contraoferta 'counteroffer'. In everyday speech en contra de is a common alternative, and llevar la contraria 'to be contrary / to argue for the sake of it' is a useful idiom.
