amar

to love

verb ah-MAHR Less Common

Origin: From Latin amare.

Usage Note

Amar expresses deep, often romantic or spiritual love and feels more elevated and literary than querer, which is the everyday word for loving people. Te quiero is the normal 'I love you' between partners or family; te amo is more intense or poetic. Amar is a perfectly regular -ar verb with no irregularities.
