aliento

breath

noun ah-LYEN-toh Rare

Also means

encouragement

Usage Note

Aliento covers both the literal air exhaled from the lungs (mal aliento = bad breath) and the figurative sense of moral support or encouragement (dar aliento = to encourage someone, cobrar aliento = to take heart). The verb alentar (to encourage, to breathe) is closely related. Do not confuse with aliento in the sense of 'spirit' found in older literary texts, where it can mean life force or vitality.

Examples

"Tenía mal aliento después del café."

Natural Translation

He had bad breath after the coffee.
