Usage Note

Tranquilo is used with estar (not ser) to describe a temporary state of calm: está muy tranquilo hoy. With ser it describes an inherently calm-natured person or a peaceful place: es un pueblo tranquilo. The imperative ¡Tranquilo! or ¡Tranquila! is a very common reassurance: 'Don't worry!' / 'Calm down!' The adverb is tranquilamente and the noun tranquilidad.
