to cover

verb tah-PAHR Rare

Also means

to plug

Usage Note

Tapar means to cover or block something — tapar la boca ('to cover one's mouth'), tapar un agujero ('to plug a hole'). The reflexive taparse means 'to cover oneself up' (e.g. with bedclothes). In Spain, tapas (the snacks) originally referred to a small plate or lid placed on top of a drink glass to keep flies out — the word shares this root.

Examples

"Tapa la olla para que no se enfríe."
