Usage Note
Supermercado is the standard term across the Spanish-speaking world. Informally it is shortened to súper in Spain and several Latin American countries: voy al súper ('I'm going to the supermarket'). A larger-format store is a hipermercado. The word follows the regular gender pattern for words ending in -do: masculine. The plural is supermercados.
