suceso

event

noun soo-SEH-soh Less Common

Origin: From Latin successus (outcome, that which follows).

Also means

incident

Usage Note

Suceso is a classic false friend: it does NOT mean 'success' — that is éxito. It means a happening, event, or (often newsworthy or negative) incident. The section of a newspaper reporting accidents and crimes is called sucesos. The shared Latin root successus explains how English developed 'success' while Spanish took 'event.'

Examples

"El suceso ocurrió en el centro de la ciudad."

Natural Translation

The incident occurred in the city centre.
