séquito

retinue; entourage

noun SEH-kee-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin sequi, 'to follow'.

Usage Note

Séquito refers to the group of attendants or followers accompanying an important person — a king's retinue, a celebrity's entourage. It is always used with a possessive or defining noun (el séquito del presidente). The stress falls on the first syllable (SÉ-), which must be marked with an accent since the word is esdrújula (stress on the antepenultimate syllable).

Examples

"El rey llegó con un séquito numeroso."

Natural Translation

The king arrived with a large retinue.
