Usage Note
Dama is a formal or elevated word for a woman of rank or refinement, used in titles (Primera Dama, 'First Lady'), historical contexts, and chess (dama = queen). In everyday speech señora is the neutral term for 'lady'. Damas y caballeros is the Spanish equivalent of 'ladies and gentlemen'. Dama also names the board game of draughts/checkers in some Spanish-speaking countries.
