rumor

rumour

noun rroo-MOHR Less Common

Origin: Latin 'rumor'

Also means

murmur

Usage Note

Rumor (also spelled rumour in English) is a near-perfect cognate, but note it is masculine in Spanish. The plural rumores follows the regular -es pattern with no accent shift. The phrase corre el rumor de que… ('rumour has it that…') is a set expression. Rumor can also denote a low murmuring sound (e.g. el rumor del río), a sense that is rarer in English.

Examples

"Corre el rumor de que cerrará la fábrica."

Natural Translation

Rumour has it that the factory will close.
