rezar

to pray

verb rreh-SAHR Less Common

Also means

to read (a text)

Usage Note

Rezar changes z to c before e (preterite recé, present subjunctive rece). Besides praying, it is used in formal or literary language to mean that a document 'reads' or 'states': el contrato reza que... ('the contract reads that...'). Rezar is slightly more informal than orar for prayer.

Examples

"La abuela reza cada noche."

Natural Translation

Grandma prays every night.
