rey

king

noun RREY Common

Origin: From Latin rex, regis.

Usage Note

Rey is the masculine form; the feminine is reina ('queen'). The plural reyes can mean 'kings' but also 'king and queen' together — los Reyes de España refers to the King and Queen of Spain. Día de Reyes (6 January) is Epiphany, the gift-giving day in most Spanish-speaking countries, more important than Christmas in many traditions.

Examples

"El rey firmó el decreto ayer."

Natural Translation

The king signed the decree yesterday.
