Retar means to challenge someone to a contest or confrontation ('te reto a que lo hagas') and in some Latin American varieties also means to scold or reprimand a child — a usage less common in Spain. The related noun is reto (a challenge). It is slightly less formal than desafiar, which carries a heavier sense of defiance or provocation.
