resignar

to resign

verb rreh-seeg-NAHR Rare

Origin: From Latin resignare (to unseal, cancel, give back).

Also means

to accept reluctantly

Usage Note

Resignar is used reflexively as resignarse a meaning 'to resign oneself to' or 'to come to terms with' — resignarse a perder (to resign oneself to losing). The non-reflexive resignar (to resign from a post) is less common; for leaving a job dimitir or renunciar are more natural. Do not confuse with resignado (resigned, accepting) which describes an emotional state.

Examples

"Tuvo que resignarse a cancelar el viaje."

Natural Translation

She had to resign herself to cancelling the trip.
