reinar
to reign
verb rreh-ee-NAHR Rare
Origin: From Latin regnare (to rule).
Also means
to prevail
Usage Note
Reinar means to reign as a monarch but is also used figuratively for anything that dominates a situation: reinaba el silencio (silence reigned). The noun reinado is the reign or period of rule. Do not confuse with rendir (to yield/surrender) or reñir (to quarrel), which look similar in print.
Examples
"El rey reinó durante cuarenta años."
Natural Translation
The king reigned for forty years.
