recomer
to gnaw at
verb rreh-koh-MEHR Less Common
Origin: From re- (again, intensifying) + comer (to eat).
Also means
to eat away at
Usage Note
Recomer is used almost exclusively in the pronominal reflexive form recomerse to express an inner psychological state — being consumed by worry, envy, or remorse (se recome de envidia, 'he is eaten up with envy'). The literal sense of 'eating again' is theoretically valid but extremely rare in modern Spanish. It is an -er verb conjugated like comer.
Examples
"Se recome de envidia al verlos felices."
Natural Translation
She is eaten up with envy seeing them happy.
Literal Translation
He-eats-himself of envy seeing them happy.
