Usage Note

Pésame is used almost exclusively in the set phrase dar el pésame (to offer condolences) or mi más sentido pésame (my deepest condolences). It is invariably masculine: el pésame. The word comes from the expression me pesa (it weighs on me / I am sorry), reflecting the original formula of sympathy.
