putada

dirty trick

noun poo-TAH-dah Rare

Usage Note

Putada is a coarse but very common colloquial noun in Spain meaning an annoyance, a raw deal, or a nasty trick played on someone — roughly equivalent to 'a bummer' or 'a bastard thing to do'. It derives from puta and is considered vulgar but is used freely in informal conversation among friends. The related verb putear means to mess someone around or treat them badly. Learners should note it is a much stronger register marker in Latin America than in Spain.

Examples

"¡Qué putada, he perdido las llaves!"
