Usage Note

Pitar means to blow a whistle, honk a car horn, or boo a performer. A referee pita a foul (blows the whistle); drivers pitan in traffic; audiences pitan an act they dislike. The noun pitido is the sound itself (a beep, whistle, or honk). In some Latin American countries, pitar also means to smoke a cigarette.
