mil

thousand

numeral meel Common

Origin: Latin mille

Usage Note

Mil is invariable (never miles as a quantifier: dos mil personas, not dos miles); miles is a noun meaning 'thousands' used in the phrase miles de ('thousands of'). Unlike cien and ciento, mil does not require un before it: 'one thousand' is simply mil, not un mil.

Examples

"El coche costó diez mil euros."

Natural Translation

The car cost ten thousand euros.
