Usage Note
Medir is an e→i stem-changing verb (mido, mides, mide…). It is used for measuring physical dimensions and abstract things (medir las consecuencias = to weigh the consequences). The idiom medir las palabras ('to measure one's words') means to speak carefully. Medida (measure, step, size) is the related noun.
