langosta

lobster

noun lahn-GOH-stah Rare

Origin: Latin locusta (locust, lobster)

Also means

locust

Usage Note

Langosta is a false friend trap even for advanced learners: it means both 'lobster' (the crustacean) and 'locust' (the insect) — the same Latin root locusta covers both. Context — sea or land — is the only differentiator. For the smaller clawless lobster, langostino (a diminutive) is a separate species commonly eaten as tapas.

Examples

"Pedimos langosta a la plancha."

Natural Translation

We ordered grilled lobster.

Literal Translation

We-ordered lobster to the grill.
