divergir

to diverge

verb dee-behr-HEER Rare

Origin: From Latin divergere, 'to bend apart'.

Also means

to differ

Usage Note

Divergir is used both literally (two roads diverge) and figuratively (opinions diverge). It takes en when specifying the point of difference: divergen en sus opiniones (they differ in their opinions). Note the spelling: the infinitive keeps -gir, but the first-person present is divergo (not divergjo).

Examples

"Los caminos divergen al llegar al río."

Natural Translation

The paths diverge when they reach the river.
