desolado

desolate, devastated

adjective deh-soh-LAH-doh Rare

Also means

grief-stricken

Usage Note

Desolado describes both a physical landscape stripped of life (un paisaje desolado) and a person overcome with grief or despair (estaba desolado tras la noticia). The two senses are equally common. When used of people, it is stronger than triste ('sad') and implies a more crushing emotional state — closer to 'devastated' than merely 'upset'.

Examples

"El pueblo quedó desolado después de la tormenta."

Natural Translation

The village was left desolate after the storm.
