desinterés

disinterest

noun deh-seen-teh-RRES Rare

Also means

indifference

Usage Note

Desinterés can mean either selfless disinterestedness (actuar con desinterés — to act unselfishly) or simple lack of interest/apathy (mostró desinterés por el tema). The two senses are almost opposite in tone — context determines whether the speaker is praising or criticising. The related adjective desinteresado similarly covers both 'selfless' and 'uninterested'.

Examples

"Mostró un claro desinterés por el trabajo."
