Usage Note
Debate is used for structured public or political debates as well as informal discussions. The verb debatir means to debate. Debate is a masculine noun and does not change form in the plural (los debates). In academic and journalistic registers it is preferred over the more colloquial discusión, which can imply argument or quarrel.
