cuidar

to look after

verb kwee-DAHR Less Common

Also means

to take care of

Usage Note

Cuidar takes a direct object when the subject cares for a person or thing: cuida a su madre ('she looks after her mother'). The reflexive cuidarse means 'to take care of oneself': ¡cuídate! is a common farewell meaning 'take care!' The related noun is cuidado ('care'; also an exclamation meaning 'watch out!'). Do not confuse cuidar with cuidarse de + infinitive, which means 'to make sure to' do something.
