Usage Note

Credencial can mean a credential, accreditation badge, or press pass, and in several Latin American countries it is the everyday word for an ID card or identity document (credencial de elector in Mexico = voter ID). The plural credenciales often refers to a diplomat's letters of credence. In Spain, carnet or documento de identidad are more common for ID.
