cerca

near

adverb SEH-rkah Common

Origin: From Latin circa (around, about).

Also means

nearby, close

Usage Note

Cerca as an adverb means 'nearby' (vivo cerca, I live nearby). As a preposition it requires de: cerca de la estación (near the station) — you cannot say cerca la estación. The antonym is lejos (far). As a noun la cerca (feminine) means a fence or enclosure, which is a completely different word sharing the same spelling.

Examples

"El hospital está muy cerca de aquí."

Natural Translation

The hospital is very close to here.
