Usage Note

Carpeta most commonly means a paper or plastic folder for documents, but in several Latin American countries it also means a desk mat or a writing pad. In Argentina, carpeta is the standard word for a school binder. Do not confuse with alfombra (carpet/rug) — the English 'carpet' is a false friend here.
