Also means
to notify
Usage Note
Avisar means to give advance notice or a warning: me avisó con tiempo (she warned me in advance). It is more neutral than advertir (to caution against danger) and more colloquial than notificar. In Latin America it can also mean simply 'to let someone know', without any sense of danger.
