Usage Note
Alma is feminine but takes the masculine article in the singular to avoid the vowel clash: el alma (not la alma), yet las almas in the plural. This pattern applies to all feminine nouns beginning with stressed a-: el agua, el hacha. Modifying adjectives still take feminine form: el alma pura. Used idiomatically in ni un alma (not a soul) and con toda el alma (with all one's heart).
Examples
"El músico pone el alma en su música."
Natural Translation
The musician puts his soul into his music.
