Usage Note
Éste is the masculine singular demonstrative pronoun ('this one'), distinct from the adjective este (this) which precedes a noun. The RAE removed the obligatory accent mark in 2010, so este and éste are now both acceptable, but many writers retain the accent to disambiguate pronoun from adjective. The feminine form is ésta, the plurals éstos / éstas.
