este

this

determiner EHS-teh Common

Usage Note

Este is the masculine singular demonstrative, part of a three-way system: este/esta (near the speaker), ese/esa (near the listener), aquel/aquella (far from both). As a determiner it precedes a noun; the accent-bearing form éste was historically used as a standalone pronoun but the Real Academia now allows dropping the accent unless ambiguity arises. Feminine is esta, plurals are estos/estas.
