Also means
vow
Usage Note
Voto covers a vote in an election (emitir un voto, 'to cast a vote') and a religious vow (voto de silencio). Derecho al voto is the 'right to vote'. Note that b and v are pronounced identically in Spanish, so voto and boto (first-person of botar, 'to bounce/throw') are homophones — a common spelling trap.
Examples
"El partido obtuvo más votos que el año anterior."
Natural Translation
The party received more votes than the previous year.
